J.M.W.Turner - Sun Rise Through Vapour

Sun Rise Through Vapour, 1807 National Gallery

Sun Rise Through Vapour, 1807 National Gallery, London.

A critic once said all Turner's painting could be called 'Sun Rising Through Vapour'. This one was so special to Turner he requested it be hang between two Claudes in the National Gallery. He actually went to an auction and brought it back, this was in pursuit of his aim to have many of his paintings in one gallery. A goal not achieved until over 100 year after he dies, when the Clore Gallery opens. The Clore Gallery is next to the Tate Gallery, London.

As a matter of  interest Turner was on the committee in 1824 that decided where to build the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square was just converted from stables to a monument of the Battle of  Trafalgar, so the site next to this was chosen.
